What??? I don’t get it.

When I started my speaking and coaching career, the leaders told me this:

"Your business will only grow as fast as you do!"

I didn't get it. I couldn't understand what they were trying to tell me.

I thought all I had to do was talk to a lot of people and get some clients. I couldn't see the big picture.

The big picture

Prospects first see us, and then we describe our offering.

But their first decision is about us, before they listen to our offer.

Did I need personal development when I started?

Yes. I still need it today 25+ years later.

When prospects sense that we are looking to improve and grow in our lives, they think, "Hey!  This professional will be around for the long term, I will listen to them.

Our business proposal is not something we sell.

It's something our prospects choose to do.

How to do, those scary approaches

Some people intimidate us. Some people are nasty.

And most people are afraid of being sold to!

So, when we approach someone scary, what can we say that reduces their fear, eliminates their defensiveness, and makes sure we won’t get rejected?

Try this.

  • “I have something that might be useful for you in the future.”

Who could resist that?

They feel safe from a high-pressure sales pitch, plus their curiosity wants to know more. This takes away the tension in our conversation.

And now we have someone listening with an open mind.
